Help me pick a camera!

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping to learn how to take better photographs so have asked for a better camera for Christmas. The photos I take for my blog are usually taken with my iPhone! I'm not wanting a super expensive camera but a one that is easy to use and takes good quality pictures. Do you think it's worth investing in a SLR camera or can you take just as good pictures on a compact digital camera? There's so much choice out there that I need some help deciding! What camera do you use or would recommend?

  1. I personally perfer a bridge or hybrid camera - they're the halfway point between a regular point and shoot camera and a DSLR - I'm (hopefully) getting the Fuji HS10 for Christmas. My thinking is that I want to be able to have a bit more control over my pictures and some better features (like super macro and a great telephotozoom as well as good control over ISO, depth of field, etc) but I don't have the money or the motivation for a proper DSLR... the lenses can end up being as much as an entire camera and they're quite big and chunky to carry around. Just my thoughts though :) xx

  3. I have a Sony DSLR and it's amazing, but reidiculously heavy! When I'm carrying it around with me I can't just have the strap simply chucked around my neck because it rubs and hurts me ): So I have to have something like a scarf there to protect my neck!
It's also really chunky, I'd advise finding a small SLR that can easily fit in your bag (unlike mine) that you can whisk out in a mo :P

  4. hey I recently purchased a canon s95 camera and I have to say I am really loving it and I think it is as good if not even better than a DSLR. It's compact, chic and user friendly. Hope that helps

  5. oooo something I can help with! Depends on the quality you are looking for! You can actually get a combined compact and DSLR which are a actually pretty fabulous. As long as it has the face detection technology which is always important when taking product shots, the face detection helps to figure out where the product is in your frame giving an overall even, clean shot. If you would like me to send you some recommendations please give me a shout! :)

  6. I've got an Olympus EPL1 for Christmas which is a compact system camera. It's much smaller and lighter than a DSLR but still does a lot of the same stuff and has changeable lenses as well. A lot of the DSLR's I looked at were just too big and bulky for me. A good website to look at for really indepth camera reviews and example pictures etc is www.photographyblog.com I found it really useful when I was deciding what to get!

  7. I have a bridge and find myself craving for a DSLR. So I think it is much better to get a DSLR than to buy a bridge and then wish for one..

  8. I may be a bit late with this one. I use a Canon 450d dslr. The new version of mine is the 550d which also does films and well as photography. If you want to go a step up there is the canon 60d. I take my camera most places and use a lightweight lens unless I know I will be shooting something I will need a different lens for. The thing with dslr is that you must have the time to learn to use it.. and dedicate some time aside in your day to that as there is so much you can do with them. I am always happy to help and give you any tips.

If you want something smaller: Lumix do a wide range of fab cameras: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/287246/index.html
